Call me crazy...

emmett vs sullivan

... I'm having some serious doubts about the name we chose for this baby boy... even though I'm almost 34 weeks and we decided ages ago.

I really want to love Sullivan. It has a lot of meaning to me. It is my maiden name, a name that I was proud of and loved. I'll be honest- I was actually a little sad to wave goodbye to my maiden name and take my husband's name when we got married. I thought it would be a neat way to carry on the Sullivan family name- and apparently, so do a lot of the Sullivans!

BUT no matter how hard I've tried, I just can't picture calling a baby, or child, or even a teenager Sullivan. Sully, yes. I looove the nickname Sully. {It was my nickname in high school + college track & cross country} But Sullivan just sounds so clunky and long to me. I'm not sure if it's because it was my former last name or what... I thought I would get used to it over time, but I haven't. Every time I refer to this baby, I call him Sully, and I feel like I should love his full name as much (if not MORE) than his nickname. Some people have suggested just naming him Sully, but to me it isn't strong enough to stand alone as a first name, particularly for an adult in the business/professional world.

As time passes, I've been thinking worrying about this more and more. I feel a little funny changing it because it took us SO long to finally agree on a name, we've already announced it, it is already up on the nursery wall. At the same time, I'm just not 100% sold on the name.

The name that is growing on me more and more (which we ALMOST chose instead of Sullivan) is Emmett. Yes, it is similar to Elliot- which was the main thing holding me back before. Buuut, at this point, I'm just so happy to have a name we both agree on and love... and I actually really like how Elliot & Emmett sound together.
His full name would be Emmett Sullivan- so my maiden name would still be in there.

Hmmm... decisions, decisions!

  1. I say.. wait until he's here and in your arms.
When you look at him I think you'll know which name to go with.

I do love Emmett though and it definitely goes very well with Elliot!

  2. I think I just maybe might(how's that for concrete?) like Emmett better.

  4. I love Emmett (and Sullivan). I agree that you could wait til he is here to see what your feelings are. But I think your gut feeling is on Emmett. Gotta follow your gut (and heart) feeling!

  5. I agree with waiting until he is here and you meet him in person to make a final decision. But I think you should also go with your gut, listen to those mama instincts! :P

I had a friend who wasn't completely sold on her son's name being Gavin River, and went with it anyway. A few months after he was born she had his name officially changed to River Gavin. River suits him so much better than Gavin would have.

  6. Hmm... well if it were me, I would stick with Sullivan. I do think that Emmett is too close to Elliot, that's just my opinion, though.
But also? That's why I never name my children before they are born. I feel like all of the anxiety of picking a name just goes away when I see their face for the first time! With both of my boys, my husband and I waited until we met them, took one look at them and just "knew" what name was right for them. We usually had a list of 4-5 names with us. Not saying that this works for everyone, but it's an option?

  7. Your new blog header is adorable! The right name will "click" for you, Jess! Both are nice choices, but I like to the to "E" names together :)

  8. Sullivan is a great name and looks good on paper, but he can just be known as Sully - I see no problem with that! :).

Emmett is a lovely name, too, though and it's such a sweet boys name.

  10. It is a hard decision. We had my sons name picked out as Channing my whole pregnancy. Name on the wall, blanket everything. Then when I was 37 weeks & my husband was deploying the next day I said NO thats not the right name!! I didnt want to change the name I had gotten used to but new it wasnt right. Go with your gut!

  12. I love them both, but I understand how you feel. It's such a big decision! I agree with one of the earlier commenters, maybe you should keep both on the board and then make your decision when you see him. Good luck, you will make the right decision in the end :)

  13. I like Emmett with Sullivan as the middle name and Sully could still be his nick name.

  14. I understand how you may be concerned about Elliot and Emmett sounding similar, however, since they will be so close in age, it could be really freaking cute.
When in doubt, choose two middle names. Emmett Grey Sullivan or Emmett Sullivan Grey?
