Baby food literature.

Honestly, I'm about as excited about starting solids as Elliot is! I think it will be such an exciting new stage in Elliot's life, and hopefully the beginning of a healthy relationship with delicious, wholesome foods. I've already decided that I'm going to try to make all of Elliot's baby food. I'm no chef, but hey, how hard could it be? I'm also thinking about doing baby led weaning... I'm not exactly sure about that yet, though. To be honest, I don't really know that much about it.
So, in order to make the next five{ish} weeks until Elliot turns 6 months go by quicker, I ordered a couple books that I can't wait to dive into!

  1. I just started Chloe on rice cereal and it has been so much stinking fun! I posted a video of her first time eating big girl food here: http://www.chloesmom.com/2011/04/up-to-date-with-chloe.html

  2. Oh, how fun! Let us know how the making the baby food goes, I want to try that when we get to that stage.

I'm also interested in baby-led weaning, it seems a lot more healthy!

  3. Yay, food is so much fun. It's awesome that you're waiting until 6 months! BLW seems awesome, we're done purees and chunks, since Lilla first started and she's almost on whole foods completely now. She doesn't so well. :) Hope those books help you out!

  4. I have the first one, and I love it! So far I've made peas and oatmeal from it. It's full of useful info that is easy to understand It is so much cheaper to make your own baby food, plus then you know everything that is going into the food.

  7. I, too, was so excited when I could start my kids on solid food! It is such a milestone. I waited to start Adelynn on them until she was 6 months old. You will have to share how making your own food goes! If I have another baby, I am going to make the baby food myself!!!

  8. Hi, I'm a lurker, and never comment, but I just wanted to say how glad I am to see the Baby Led Weaning book in those two books! I have BLW my son (he is not 10 months old) and it was the best decision I ever made - he eats real 'grown up' food and really enjoys sitting down and eating meals with us. I'm quite hardcore and have never made a puree or fed him rice cereal but I fully believe what is written in the book - it is the way forward!
If you decide to BLW please share it in your blog and let more people know about it! (sorry quite a long comment considering I usually just lurk!)

  9. check out www.wholesomebabyfood.com too! It has a lot of homemade babyfood recipes!!!

I can't wait for T to start either. I too feel bad waiting because he is SO interested in food so I may be caving and trying some food sooner :/

  10. I have the first one - it's got some great basic recipes in there- nothing too complex which is nice. I made a couple things from it- I like how it goes monthly - very helpful b/c it guides you with what they can eat at that age! :)

  11. I'm also excited to see the BLW book there! My son is 8 months and we have mostly done BLW with him. I did start him on some rice cereal about 5 months to encourage him to sleep longer at night (which helped!) then at 6 months we switched to just BLW. It's so amazing watching them explore food, and he just eats pretty much what we eat now (I just try to limit salt and sugar). Veggie lasagna, stews, stirfrys, burritos, omelettes, etc. He loves eating and will try anything, and you don't have to spend ages preparing separate food for them. As the book says - there's nothing wrong with spoon feeding, but it's just not necessary.

A couple of tips - good food to start with are chunks of steamed veggies (pumpkin, sweet potato, broccoli) and fruit (apple, pear, etc) - I tend to leave the skin on everything now and he just sucks/chews the flesh off. Also good are avocado, toast, banana with half the peel cut off. After a few weeks you can just give them whatever. There is a lot of mess though, especially at the beginning, so I would get a plastic mat for under the highchair and some decent bibs! Have fun!

Can't wait to see what you make!
